Schools have a very important role to play in promoting health and wellbeing to students.
The Canteen is pivotal in this role as it sits at the center of a whole school approach to health and wellbeing and is key to the provision of nutritious foods and drinks that directly support children’s learning and development.
Canteens offer numerous benefits that extend beyond merely providing food to students, playing a vital role in promoting health and well-being while also contributing to the broader community and environment. They are an integral part of the school community and Parent body culture and have the ability to influence the food choices made by students at a young age.
The school community includes Principals, teachers, parent body, parents and students. Many canteens in WA schools are operated by the parent body i.e. the Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) in government schools and Parents and Friends (P&F) in non- government schools.
Foodcore have a suite of resources for parent bodies to guide them in ensuring that their school canteen provides a healthy profitable food service but also one that embodies a Health Promoting School, one that is constantly strengthening its capacity as a healthy setting for living, learning and working. For more information about how your school can be a health promoting school visit the WA Health Promoting Schools Association Inc.
